tym|pa|num «TIHM puh nuhm», noun, plural -nums, -na «-nuh».
1. = eardrum. (Cf.eardrum)
2. the middle part of the ear, consisting of a cavity in the temporal bone; middle ear.
3. the diaphragm in a telephone.
4. Architecture. a) the vertical recessed face of a pediment, enclosed by the cornices, usually triangular and often adorned with sculpture. b) a slab or wall between an arch and the horizontal top of a door or window below.
5. a drum, especially a kettledrum; tympano.
6. the stretched membrane of a drum; drumhead.
